The media is owned by rich employers, executives, directors and shareholders, just like anything else in our system. As a result, they're more than happy to report on the evils of dictators like Gaddaffi, or Mubarak and the fight against them. What they're not so happy to report about is when people take action on our own doorsteps against domestic dictators, unless of course they can spin the whole thing to pretend that our demands of freedom and democracy are unreasonable, or our tactics too extreme.
This was witnessed by myself earlier this year during the rebellion in Wisconsin in the United States in reaction to the dismantling of what little democracy still exists in American workplaces. Despite the state of Wisconsin grinding to a halt, the coppers refusing to act against protesters and celebrities such as Tom Morello getting involved, the whole insurgency against capitalism was barely reported on British television, or in mainstream newspapers. It was as if it was not happening.
Now, not even a year later, Americans have taken action again against the greed and corruption of the rich and the rebel forces have now advanced upon possibly the biggest stronghold in North America of the capitalist class. I speak of none other than Wall Street in New York City.
On the 17th of September, (yes, nearly a fortnight ago!) protesters gathered in Wall Street, NYC to call the rich to account. It has been made very clear that there is no intention to allow Wall Street to be returned to the control of the capitalist class again. This strategic ground is to remain under liberated control indefinitely. At least, that's the plan.
Now, I'm not going to suggest that this is anything like the scale of the mass rebellions in the Arab world. There's similarities to Tahrir Square, but as Phil Dickens, from The People's Republic of Scouseland, has recently written, lets not let this get out of context. While this is an important display of organisation and resistance, the revolution it is not. Far too many Americans continue to get up every morning and feed the enemy, whether they know it, or not. Let's also be honest, sitting in a park, out of the way, is hardly going to have the rich shaking in their boots.
Even so, it is surprising to say the least, that this continuing battle is not being reported in the UK at all, with only a handful of snippets in the papers. Last night, a number of Anarchists in Huddersfield were watching BBC news at the pub. We saw some reporting about Dale Farm, which is something else close to my heart, the Eurozone bailout and then, this. Yup. BBC news, decided that it was more vital the public were informed that TESCO, Britain's most powerful despot, is having a sale! I kid you not. The BBC, the organisation that claims that the TV License is justified because it means that they do not broadcast commercials, is passing off this advertisement for a supermarket as "news", instead of reporting on a growing insurgency in the heart of the United State's economy.
I would probably have not heard about anything going on over there at all if it wasn't for our international activist networks. That's how bad it is.
This cannot be allowed to continue. Our oppressors are international and are more than happy to use that against us. Meanwhile, we do not hear of the struggles happening literally on the opposite coast to us, let alone be in a position to react to them. If we have learnt anything from the Zapatista movement, it's how international solidarity of workers can not only boost the morale of our comrades abroad, but also remind the rich that we are watching and that the world holds them accountable for their actions.
So, here I am. Offering a bounty. Anyone who can get our brothers and sisters in the United States some airtime on British TV, or on the front page of the papers, will win this very special prize - One bottle, complete with rag, filled with highly volatile scotch whiskey! Do not light and drink at the same time.
Ladies and gentlemen, please be aware; The revolution will not be televised.
